Customer Reviews:

Great guide for coaches of any age group (24 May 2004)
I have a library of many football coaching books, but this is the one book I refer to the most. Not only does it give good clear descriptions of exercises, but it covers everything from basic techniques right through to coaching attacking & defending and positional play.

Coaches that are new to the game and have no basic training will also find some great help in dealing with parents, setting up coaching sessions, handling difficult players and also ethical values.

I would advise any budding coach to get some formal training through their football association, but if that is not possible then this book is definitely the next best thing and covers many topics that you'll find on coaching courses.

Very informative and usefull book for the intermediate coach (07 December 1998)
I have coached youth rec. soccer for 4 years and own several books on this subject . Alan Hargreaves Skills and Stategies for Coaching Soccer is by far the best book I have , and use the most .It is very clear and concise and unlike several books I've purchased , most all the info and drills are useable .I would not recommend this book for a first time coach . But for a coach that wants to bring their soccer knowlege to the next level . Great book !

Great for kids with greater attention span (28 October 1998)
Well written book with many drills for beginner to expert. Not meant for 6 year olds who have limited attention span. I am looking forward to applying the drills when the children are a couple years older.

Everything you ever needed to tell your kids is right here! (18 May 1998)
Hargreaves gives us coaches insight we can all use. As a post college player I began coaching U-9 two years ago. The book didn't tell me much that I didn't already know, it just told me how to tell my players how to do the things I did know. Lots of fun drills, coaching philosophy and insight into different player's mindsets. Every coach should have it in his/her library.

A better book than I thought originally (05 November 1997)

I agree with Rick Siler. In re-reading my review of this book, I realized that it sounded rather lukewarm. Actually, this is one of the best overall books on youth soccer coaching that I have found so far. There are a lot of useful tips on technique, and a very good section on defense.
