| | Customer Reviews: comment about Levi Straus (10 June 1999)I've only seen the comment about Levi's and it's completly wrong. Levi was unemployed and made the pants out of sail cloth. Dyed them so they would look more like suit pants. A miner saw them and thought the tough material would make them good mining pants (1849 49ers). The pockets were added to carry rock samples. The rivets were added because the weight of the rock samples kept tearing the pockets loose. I wouldn't buy a book when the first thing I read was wrong. My whole family has used this book for years (06 February 1999)When I use this book in school or university people always marvel ask where I got such unique information One book for a desert island! (31 December 1998)I wore this book out. I read it, reread it, bookmarked it to death and referred to it so often. Now I need another one. I'm going to buy *two more*, just in case. Excellent reading. (19 November 1998)I didn't learn this much history in school. It is amazing to learn that customs we practice today have their roots hundreds, even thousands of years ago. Ages high school to 100 will enjoy this book. great book for hard to buy-for in-laws (07 July 1998)A great book for people interested in just about everything. Since the book is so diverse you are sure to find something for everyone. A wonderful choice if you need to get a gift for someone very hard to buy for. I've not met anyone who hasn't thoroughly enjoyed the book. Frankly, I think its a terrific "bathroom" or guestroom book. | |
