I'm 40+, 5 5, dress to suit my size 14 hour glass figure. These styles were mostly mid thigh teen mag lookalikes with some very boring safe classics. And what's the point of using 4 gorgeous long-legged lovelies as models - let's face it, black bin liners would look good on those pretty things. I'll go back to my good old Trinny & Sue bible - they may be infinitely less likeable in the flesh, but their book's a heck of a lot more useful and waay less irritating. Sorry Gok babe, I hope it made you lots of dosh but it's tripe! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great for inspiring confidence in women of any age (09 January 2009)One of the reviews here mentions how 'older' women might not get what this book is about. I admit, I had never watched or read anything by Gok Wan until I saw this book. But I had to give it a look--anyone as enthusiastic as he is about helping us ordinary women (those who never have been nor will ever be a size zero) deserves a chance to rescue us mere mortals from wardrobe disasters. I'm 52 years old and I was truly inspired by this book to change what I wear and to wear what I admire. I love clothes and read all the fashion mags. I buy designer and discount. I don't want to dress in floral prints like a grandmother, but I want to stop drooling over the mini skirts (those days are gone, sadly). I do go out, I do want to look great at work, and I do love to shop. I am having great fun trying to recreate some of the outfits in this book that I think are classy, easy and will make me look great at my age. I did get a little tired of the 'gorgeous girl' but, you know what, after I cleaned out my closet and was trying on my newly inspired outfits, I was telling myself that I was gorgeous. So, thanks to Gok and this book, I not only feel gorgeous, I am starting to look it. (He also does lingerie for plus-size women; now THAT is someone who truly understands women--ALL women!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If I hear one more "Gorgeous Lady"..... (08 January 2009)Honestly what is this bloke on! I love him on his series how to look good naked, and thought some of his fasion advice was really good so I got the book.. But.. As other reviews have said he keeps calling you "gorgeous lady" or "sexy something or other" very patronising. The advice on clothes seem to be aimed at one sort of person of one shape. His girls in the book were all small, average height with good figures unlike his tv series so obviously everything looks ok on them. I thought he'd have different shapes and sizes and tell you what sort of clothes would suit them. Even the clothes he did have were just weird, especially his underwear.. apparently we should all be wearing mis match knickers and bra .. WITH A CARDIGAN..! Apparently its sexy! My husband thought it was hillarious! So ok, I think you get the idea I'm non to impressed! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Awful (27 December 2008)This book was given to me as a gift - seeing as i occasionally watch the show i thought the book might be right up my street. It wasn't. Not one line doesn't address the reader as 'gorgeous girl' or 'sexy lady.' If people need to be spoken like that CONTINUALLY they need therapy not a style guide and it just comes across as patronising embellishment. To be honest, the things he mentions about style seem pretty self explanatory - certainly nothing ground breaking. However seeing as im only in my late teens, i get the impression that the book might be aimed at older women, eeing as it does have a section for mothers. Certainly not for younger women. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Gok seems to have lost the plot (04 December 2008)I have loved Gok's shows, and bought his previous books, and been a big fan; he treats women like individuals, he helps their confidence, and his gentle reassuring style is really helpful. So why oh why did he write this condescending childish book? It seems to be aimed at a very specific early twenties funky social butterfly, which is a very small market that I am not a member of. To say I am disappointed would be a major understatement. I know we all run out of ideas, but the trick is to quit while you are ahead and leave your audience wanting more, which sadly has escaped Gok. Sorry Gok, but my tip is to bypass this book, and keep the love. | ![]() |
