Having bought a fair few slow cooker books recently, I can say without a doubt that this one is the best one for the array of recipes included and the price of the book. For under a fiver, you really can't go wrong. Sara Lewis writes in a way that is not condesending, but gentle and helpful. She also provides you with helpful hints and tips about slow cookers. For example, Sara explains about the different sizes in slow cookers and why its important to buy a slow cooker in a size that is right for your needs, not just the biggest and cheapest one you can find. It makes all the difference. I would suggest that when you buy this book, you take time to flick through the recipes and see which ones you would like to try first. This is because, at first glance, the list of ingredients on some recipes may seem long and complicated, however, on closer inspection, you will find that the many of the recipes use ingredients that you already have in your storecupboard or that will make their way into your cupboards on a regular basis. It works out economical too since these ingredients are herbs, spices, stock etc which, once bought, will be used time and again in your cooking. Purchasing beef, chicken, salmon or fresh vegetables etc can be worked around so long as you plan in advance. As you become more confident in your ability to use your slow cooker, you will begin to adapt the ingredients to make variations on a dish you like or because you may not have all the ingredients you require. With regards to the time takes to prepare these dishes, 15 or 20 minutes in the morning is no time at all, SO LONG AS YOU ARE PREPARED and are willing to get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning to make sure you have enough time. You can even chop up some ingredients (or lay them out ready on your work surface/ in the fridge the night before) so that you don't feel so rushed in the morning. If you are unwilling to put in just a little effort, then you might find it difficult to get the best from your slow cooker. Even men who are reluctant to cook will find this style of cooking appealing. Why? It means that for a little work in the morning, they can produce a dish that is healthy and economical, and come home at the end of the day with dinner ready and waiting. In addition, it's very difficult to burn a recipe in a slow cooker. This book is also perfect for students/house-sharers etc who like each other and want to help split the costs of food between them. Remember, you don't have to use your slow cooker every day - why not try using it over the weekend first, so that you can get used to using it rather than trying to use it on a weekday morning when you're already late for work and feeling stressed. Slow cooking can be daunting when you begin at first, and mistakes will be made! However, it will prove to be one of the best lessons that you will ever help yourself to learn. P.S., browning meat before you add it to your slow cooker really does help...for taste and appearance! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A veritable feast of delights. (31 July 2010)Having been stumped for ideas after the recent purchase of a slow cooker, I happened upon this little book. It is jam-packed with recipes and after the pretty miserable recipe book which was included with my slow cooker I have been having a great time experimenting! My husband is delighted with it all and I can highly recommend this book. Happy slow cooking! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Things I didn't know (17 July 2010)I bought this item to go with a slow cooker I bought for my daughter and son-in-laws wedding anniversary. I was very impressed with it. I have had a slow cooker for years, but I didn't know that you could make jam in it. I had also never thought of making rice pudding in it. Needless to say I copied out a couple of recipes before I gave it to them and told them I may want to borrow it again. On second thoughts, I may well buy myself one. | ![]() |
