Lots of facts and figures and original pictures make this a very good read for the old and young gamer. It also has a fair amount of information on the origin of gaming and the hardware development, presented in a fun and not too geeky way. All you favourite games will be here from Pong to Tomb Raider, across all platforms including PC and arcade, covered in excellent detail as you would expect from Guinness. I'm not that interested in the records to be honest and bought this more as a game guide and nostalgia trip and was glad I did. It is pretty well up to date (early 2008) and great to pick up and delve into the odd chapter here or there. I'm not sure whether this will be an annual thing or not but as there doesn't seem to be a 2009 version out yet, this would still make a great gift this Christmas. I would also recommend "Game On! From Pong to Oblivion" which has great reviews on 50 top games across the different platforms also and is one of few books that my daughter (aged 12) reads avidly. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A great book in every way ! (20 September 2008)This book really is perfection on paper for anyone who appreciates great computers, great video games, and great records. From the first computer ever made, the youngest and oldest gamers and the highest earning gamers around the world to the best-selling games of all time, the fastest-selling games of all time, and how gaming has successfully evolved, from Commodore to Xbox; from Sega to Nintendo Wii; from cartridge to disc. It claims to be "the gamers' bible" - and you know what? I couldn't think of a better phrase to dub the Guinness World Records 2008 Gamers Edition. It's a simply awesome book in every way. It's set out in the best way possible: glossy pages that are simply stuffed with beautifully proportioned, high definition colour photos. Every one of the 256 pages are something special. All in all then, an easily achieved 5 stars. Even if you're not a gamer, even if you just like computers or doing things on your computer, this is still the book for you. It covers everything to do with the most important invention in history: the computer. So, if you like gaming, like Guinness World Records, and want to combine the two... this is ultimately the perfect book for you. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Game On! (14 September 2008)The Guinness World Record Gamer's Edition is the ideal companion for the general gamer, complete with a history of gaming, lots of facts and figures and also arcade records for the true die-hards who fancy having another go at such classics like PacMan! Full of colour and pictures this book is packed with all sorts of information as it attempts to cover all the famous characters and series. It's a good read and I couldn't turn it down at such a low price! I wouldn't really advise it towards the non-gamers around us, but if you are curious to understand what the kids are always talking about then why not? From Mario to Master Chief you'll find it all in this tidy little book and I can only imagine it is going to become a yearly regular which should please many of you. As I said it's not a bad buy at this price and would make a great gift for anyone who is joystick mad so to speak! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm a non-gamer and I enjoyed it (05 September 2008)I got this book for my boyfriends's birthday and I think I read it before he even had a chance to! It's very fun and colourful, containing info on both retro and 2007's game releases. There were even a couple of nostalgic moments from my childhood which made me smile. If they do a 2009 version, I'll probably buy it (for myself this time!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fun, easy to read! (06 August 2008)The book is set out in a way thats easy to read. The facts are impressive. Its interesting to read about your favourite games. Includes most of the best, most successful game series' like GTA and MGS. Fun to read. Good pictures. Nice arcade highscore section, compare you scores! | ![]() |
